Application: GeoExplorer

AVL Services are made possible by integrating Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware with wireless communications networks (TELUS Mobility’s data networks) and Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping technology (GeoExplorer). TELUS Geomatics links all three. While there are many ways to deliver AVL solutions, the underlying goals are to accurately collect, display and retain vehicle data to assist customers with their fleet decision-making processes. Any company with a fleet of vehicles is a potential customer.

GPS modems are installed the client’s vehicles. Individual IP addresses (from TELUS Mobility) are assigned to each GPS modem to broadcast vehicle specific data. Satellites can also used to broadcast data when vehicles operate outside of the cellular coverage area. Data, including vehicle location, speed and route traveled, is then collected and stored on a secure TELUS-hosted server. The frequency of data sampling by distance traveled (every 500 meters, every kilometer, etc.) or by time elapsed (every minute, every 15 minutes, etc.) is set by the customer.

Customers access vehicle data over the Internet by logging on to GeoExplorer. This tool enables them to track vehicles in real-time, anywhere in North America on up-to-date electronic maps. They can also determine a vehicle’s location as it relates to their strategic assets or their own clients. The vehicle’s data history is retained and can be accessed with GeoExplorer in standard or customized reports.

GeoExplorer can readily be adapted to capture additional information to meet unique customer requirements. This includes everything from employee safety notification to motion sensors, temperature gauges, door switches, gas consumption, and more. This is done through installing the appropriate sensors and linking them to the GPS modem. TELUS Geomatics can access these unique requirements and determine what can be delivered, when and at what additional cost.
